👩🍳 Instructions
1 Preheat and Prepare
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans or line with parchment paper for easy release.
2 Mix Dry Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt until evenly combined.
3 Combine Wet Ingredients
In another bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, oil, eggs, vanilla extract, and vinegar.
4 Blend Wet and Dry
Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry mixture. Mix until just combined—do not overmix.
5 Add Hot Water & Color
Slowly pour in the hot water and add the black food coloring if using. Mix until the batter is smooth. It will be thin—this ensures a moist cake!
6 Bake the Layers
Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans. Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool in pans for 10 minutes before transferring to wire racks.
7 Make the Frosting
Beat the cream cheese and butter together until fluffy. Gradually mix in the powdered sugar, then add the vanilla and heavy cream. Beat until smooth and creamy.
8 Assemble the Cake
Once the cakes are completely cool, spread a thick layer of frosting on top of the first cake. Add the second layer and frost the top and sides generously.
9 Finish with Flair
For an extra touch of luxury, decorate with chocolate shavings, sprinkles, or even edible gold leaf. Chill for 20 minutes before slicing for perfect cuts.
💡 Pro Tip:
If you don’t have black food coloring, the dark cocoa powder alone still gives a rich, dramatic look. But for the boldest black velvet appearance, it’s worth including!
